Pittsburgh vs. Penn State Betting Preview

Posted by Daniel Saenz on July 11, 2016 in

In a huge rivalry game in Week 2 of the NCAA Football odds season; the Penn State Nittany Lions are set to take on the Pittsburgh Panthers. This is one of the first games of the day in the second week of the season. The Pittsburgh Panthers are scheduled to start their 2016 season the Saturday before, as they take on the Villanova Wildcats. Following this game for Pittsburgh, they go on the road to Oklahoma State, and then start their conference season with North Carolina. The Panthers were 8-5 last season. Pittsburgh dropped their last two games, to Miami, and then in the Military Bowl on December 28th to Navy. For Penn State, they open the season against the Kent State Golden Flashes. The Nittany Lions were 7-6 a season ago, and dropped their final four games, including the Taxslayer Bowl against Georgia.

Why Bet on the Pittsburgh Panthers

Last season was quite an interesting one for Pat Narduzzi in his first season at Pittsburgh. A lost player early in the season, and then a crushing loss to Iowa. The Panthers did a great job to right the ship throughout the season. Pittsburgh expects to have James Conner back this season, and look for the former Player of the Year to get a heavy workload. Tyler Boyd was a massive workhorse as a receiver a season ago, and will be hard to replace. Look for guys like Quadree Henderson and Zach Challingsworth to get a good look early. The offensive line is a work in progress, but looks to be heading the right away.

Why Bet on the Penn State Nittany Lions

The Penn State Nittany Lions are another season into the next season under the James Franklin regime. Now, Franklin has a new assistant after Bob Shoop took off for Tennessee. The Nittany Lions also lost several top players to the NFL Draft. Quarterback Christian Hackenberg is gone, and the options are to Trace McSorely and Jake Zembiec. Those two will battle it out through the summer, and possibly even split snaps in the season opener. The offensive line for the Nittany Lions is still a work in progress, as well as the upbeat offensive. Finally, Saquon Barkley could be the most explosive player on the offensive side of the ball in all of the Big Ten.

My Expert Betting Analysis & Prediction

This should be a very entertaining game. Both teams should remain unbeaten coming into this game, and this would give both power programs a jump start into their conference season. The Nittany Lions have a tough time; going to Heinz Field, where there will be a tremendous crowd for the Panthers. Penn State may not have the horses to keep up with the Panthers. Look for Pittsburgh to use their ground and pound game early, and then open it up with some passing later. The Nittany Lions are going to have a tough time scoring against a Pittsburgh team that will be solid on the defensive end. Look for Pittsburgh to win this game rather easily.

My Pittsburgh vs Penn State Pick

The bet here is the Pittsburgh Panthers -7 over the Penn State Nittany Lions.
