Top Picks for the first round of NCAA Football Bowls

Well, NCAA Football Bowls are upon us, perhaps the single greatest time of the year for football purists. There are 39 games on the slate for around 3 weeks of viewing. I’ve taken a look at some of the matchups and here are my thoughts on a few of them as well as some of my thought process for making the NCAAF Betting picks I have.

Top Picks for the first round of NCAA Football Bowls

New Mexico Bowl – Dec. 15, 2:00 pm

Utah State 28 – 24 over North Texas. Utah State comes into this one a ten point favorite by way of Vegas’ spread. I think a neutral field will do some good for the Mean Green. Although I don’t see them pulling the upset, they will cover the spread. Take North Texas +9.

New Orleans Bowl – Dec. 15, 9:00 pm

Appalachian State takes on Middle Tennessee as they roll into the game as a touchdown favorite. I’ll take them to cover that spread. The Mountaineers of Appalachian State have become quite a mid-major powerhouse in Division 1 football. I think their pedigree and history for big game upsets will add to their confidence and momentum here as they dominate the game 37 – 17. Appalachian State wins big and covers the touchdown spread.

Birmingham Bowl – Dec. 22, 12:00 pm

Memphis looked like a world beater against UCF in their last game, but this time they will take on Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons have the advantage of playing a tough slate of games in the ACC, but I actually like Memphis to win outright in this game. Memphis comes in as 4.5 point favorites and I’ll take them to cover by a score of 35 – 27.

Armed Forces Bowl – Dec. 22, 3:30 pm

Houston takes on Army in this year’s Armed Forces Bowl. Not much of a road game for the Houston Cougars as the game is played in Fort Worth, Texas. For that reason, I’ll take the “Coogs” to cover their modest 2 points and win this game by a score of 31 – 21.

Quick Lane Bowl – Dec. 26, 5:15 pm

Minnesota and Georgia Tech will meet in this game at Ford Field in Detroit. I think the offensive genius of P.J. Fleck is something to take into account, but it is very difficult to defend the triple option, especially on a field where conditions will not be a factor.

Georgia Tech is one of the favorites for the first round of NCAA Football Bowls.

Georgia Tech has speed at critical positions on offense and will run around, though, and over this Minnesota defense. I’ll take the Yellow Jackets to outscore the Golden Gophers 31 – 27, covering their 3.5 point spread advantage.

Pinstripe Bowl – Dec 27, 5:15 pm

Miami and Wisconsin meet up in this one. The unfortunate draw for Miami is that this game is played outdoors in New York in late December. Most teams that come from a warm climate and are asked to play in adverse weather typically do not fare well. This is particularly the case here as the Hurricanes take on the Badgers of Wisconsin, perhaps the team best suited for these sort of conditions. I’ll take Wisconsin to roll through Miami and their tough defense in this one as they upset the 3 point favorite by over a touchdown. I’ll say Wisconsin edges Miami by a score of 27 – 14.

Have a great week and get ready for the great NCAA Football Bowls!
