NCAAF Betting: Notre Dame vs Wisconsin Analysis

Posted by Derrick Harper on September 23, 2021 in

It’s been a rocky start for both of these teams that entered the season ranked among the top 12 in the country, but Wisconsin lost their opener 16-10 Penn State to drop from 12th to 18th and Notre Dame has struggled while going 3-0 but has fallen out of the top ten to the 12th spot in the polls. Notre Dame’s opponents have a combined 3-6 record in 2021 with one Power Five win, a win over an FCS school, and also a loss to another FCS team.

Wisconsin opened with a tough 16-10 home loss to 19th rated Penn State despite outgaining the Nittany Lions, but committed three turnovers to thwart their chances for a big conference win. The Badgers come into the game that will be played at Chicago’s Soldier Field after an off week which followed a dominating 34-9 victory over Eastern Michigan. NCAA Football – Notre Dame Fighting Irish At Wisconsin Badgers Preview

Notre Dame Fighting Irish Betting Preview

The Irish haven’t been particularly impressive, especially against the run, allowing an average of 148 yards a game on the ground, but Florida State was able to rack up 264 rushing yards for an average of 5.5 yards per attempt. It took overtime for Notre Dame to prevail over 0-3 Florida State and late scores to post a 32-29 win against Toledo and a 27-13 victory over Purdue.

Offensively, Notre Dame is averaging over 300 yards in the passing game, but isn’t nearly as effective on the ground at 108 yards per contest and only 2.9 yards per attempt. The lack of a solid run game has made it difficult for the Irish to control the clock and doesn’t leave much margin for error if their defense struggles against a top opponent.

Wisconsin Badgers Betting Preview

Wisconsin is outgaining their opponents 438 to 195 in the two games they’ve played and held Penn State to 50 yards rushing in the opener. They were also able to run for 174 yards against the Nittany Lions so it looks like teams can expect to face a typical bruising Badger lineup for the rest of the season that is tough to run on and can pound the ball.

The Badgers are led by running back Chez Mellusi who has averaged 133 yards a game with two touchdowns and is assisted by Isaac Guerendo, who is averaging almost nine yards a carry for 78 yards a contest. Quarterback Graham Mertz has been efficient, passing for 163 yards a game, but his two interceptions against Penn State proved costly.

Notre Dame vs Wisconsin Prediction and Free Pick

The Fighting Irish have been living on borrowed time and don’t look nearly as effective on either side of the ball as last season’s ACC regular-season champions and College Football Playoff participants. This is a very rough matchup for Notre Dame, so look for Wisconsin to stuff the run and force the Irish to throw the football while the Badgers take advantage of a porous Notre Dame defensive front.
