Idaho vs Colorado State Potato Bowl Betting Pick & Prediction

Posted by Peter Boysen on December 20, 2016 in

Colorado State heads north to take on Idaho in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl on Thursday night. The CSU Rams (7-5) won four of their last five games to cement their bowl eligibility, while the Vandals (8-4) won their last four straight to finish the season on a high note. The two teams have not met on the field for six years; in 2010, the Rams prevailed in a 36-34 nailbiter. Check out our research and advice on this bowl matchup as well as the rest of our college football betting picks and odds for the bowl season.

Why should you bet on the Rams?

The Rams absolutely demolished the San Diego State Aztecs, 63-31, in their regular season finale. This is the same SDSU team that delivered a whipping to Houston in a major upset in the Las Vegas Bowl this past weekend. Quarterback Nick Stevens had a terrific night against the Aztecs, throwing a season best four touchdown passes. Stevens came on as the quarterback in the middle of the year after Colin Hill went down to injury, and he has thrown 14 touchdown passes against just three picks in his six starts and nine games total. Izzy Matthews and Dalyn Dawkins share the running duties, and they combined for 1,506 yards on the season. Idaho has a fairly stout defense against the run, so the burden could fall on Stevens to lead the attack. Defense is the Achilles heel for this Colorado State team, so if you like them to win you see them being able to put up big points on the board and win running away.

Why should you put your money on the Vandals?

This is the final game for Idaho as an FBS program, so they may have more motivation to finish their status as a bowl-eligible program on a high note. Quarterback Matt Linehan tends to struggle with ball management as he hurled 10 interceptions this year. The Vandals also have a tandem at tailback, featuring Isaiah Saunders and Aaron Duckworth, who combined for 1,203 yards on the season. Wide receiver Trent Cowan led the team with 532 yards through the air, and that passing game could be called on again to test the Colorado State defense. On defense, Idaho had a strong second half of the season and could present some challenges to the Ram attack.

Betting Pick and Final Score Prediction

Bowl games are strange, because you have groups of teenagers traveling far from home and playing in games that are exciting but ultimately do not have anything to do with things like conference record. Given that this game is in Idaho, I see the Vandals as having more of an advantage than they would in a true neutral site bowl. In most cases I would pick the Rams to cover this easily, but I see the Vandals putting up a mighty effort while the Rams might get a little bit bored with playing a Sun Belt team. I predict a final score of Colorado State 30, Idaho 23.
