Week 10 NCAAf Betting Lines: Clemson Goes for Sinking Seminoles

Posted by Aaron . on November 6, 2015 in

Historically, if one of these teams has come into this game unbeaten, it’s been Florida State. This year, it would have been both if not for a courageous effort by Georgia Tech to knock off the Seminoles, returning a blocked field goal attempt for a touchdown to win with time expiring. Their only loss this season and the string of victories by Clemson put the Tigers ahead in the NCAAF betting lines for this game.

Can the Noles Find the Courage to Stop the Undefeated Tigers?

Dabo Swinney has his Clemson Tigers playing some of the very best ball in the NCAA right now. His offense is led by Heisman Trophy contender DeShaun Watson, and his defense has been beyond stout this year. Don’t forget that the Seminoles are dangerous enough, even after that loss to Georgia Tech. The Seminoles overcame some significant injuries to knock off Syracuse last week.

The past few years, the winner of this game has also won the ACC Atlantic Division, and Clemson is ready to put Florida State’s run of owning the conference to an end. So let’s take a closer look at this matchup.

Clemson Tigers

For the Seminoles to win, they need to do two things: stretch the field against Clemson and tighten up their own running defense. Clemson’s defense might be terrific, but it does have some vulnerabilities. When Clemson struggled a bit against North Carolina State when it came to passes down the field. Clemson permitted 250 yards or more, including three passes of at least 20 yards, when they beat Louisville, Notre Dame and N.C. State. The other five wins show a Clemson team permitting only 104.8 yards per game and throwing at least two “chunk” passes. The Seminoles have a downfield passing attack that is strong, as Syracuse saw last week. It looks like the best way to beat the Clemson defense is to make it stretch.

The Seminoles also need an improved running defense. They started out well, but they permitted 5.33 yards per carry and 4.12 per carry with two scores against the Orange of Syracuse. Clemson has featured more of the run this season, and the last two games have shown the positive results, as they ran for 416 yards and six scores against Miami.

Florida State Seminoles

For Clemson to win, they need to keep the momentum rolling on offense. The Tigers can amass yards and points at a rate that few other teams in the NCAA can match. In their last four games, the put up at least 530 yards of offense each week. They have a two-game streak of scoring 50 points or more on the line, and Watson has passed for over 300 yards in three of the last four games. The opposing defenses have been high quality lately, including the best unit in the world at BC. FSU has an athletic defense that will put a challenge to the Tiger offense, but Clemson has a terrific setup now. The offense already carried a setup court, and that offense will now lead the way in the most important game this year. Clemson also has to attack the quarterback. If they don’t, FSU can dice and slice the field, and give Clemson headaches all day long.
