NCAA Football: Best Early 2018 Big 12 Title Bets

Posted by Derrick Harper on July 27, 2018 in

The Big 12 changed the equation last year by bringing back its championship game. With just 10 teams but two spots in the title game, the door is open for most of the conference to earn their way to the Big 12 Championship Game. It also makes it a little more difficult to make a preseason prediction on what team will win the title. Here are the teams with the best odds of being crowded Big 12 champs in the 2018 NCAA Football season.

NCAA Football: Best Early 2018 Big 12 Title Bets

Oklahoma +100

The Sooners have won the last three Big 12 titles and are usually a safe bet. Head coach Lincoln Riley thinks this year’s team could be just as talented as the one that reached the College Football Playoff last year. With Kyler Murray taking over for Heisman winner Baker Mayfield, the Oklahoma offense may not skip a beat.

Oklahoma wants to return to the Playoff this season, so they know they have to take care of business in the Big 12, making them a tough team to beat and a safe pick.

Texas +160

Finally, there is some love for the Longhorns. Texas took some big steps forward in Tom Herman’s first year, especially on defense, and the second season under Herman could be even better.

However, at +160, there’s not much value in betting on Texas. The Longhorns are still a little young and have a quarterback battle to sort out, although both are capable options. Maybe wait another year until you take the Longhorns to win the league.

West Virginia +650

This could be the best West Virginia team since they moved to the Big 12 and their best chance to win the conference. The Mountaineers believe quarterback Will Grier will be a Heisman contender. If he lives up to expectations, West Virginia will have a chance to win every game they play, especially if the defense can make some positive contributions.

The caveat is the Mountaineers travel a long way for every road game and that grueling schedule can sometimes catch up with them in such an unforgiving league.

TCU +650

If the Horned Frogs are going to win the Big 12, they’ll do it with defense, which is a little taboo in this league. Nevertheless, TCU has the kind of front-seven that can give the offensive juggernauts of the Big 12 some problems.

TCU is one of the NCAA Football favorites to win the Big 12 in 2018.

Also, outside of away games against Texas and West Virginia, they have their toughest conference games at home, which should give the Horned Frogs a good chance to finish in the top two and play in the Big 12 title game for the second straight year.

Iowa State +1600

The sleeper in the Big 12 has to be Iowa State. Last season was a fairy tale for the Cyclones and things could get even better in 2018. This is Matt Campbell’s third year in Ames, so Iowa State should have a little more depth and experience, as the foundation has been set.

Quarterback Kyle Kempt was given an extra year of eligibility, and with running back David Montgomery back, the Iowa State offense is in great shape. Remember, this team won at Oklahoma last year, so they know they can beat anybody, which makes them an interesting dark horse to win the NCAA Football Big 12 title this year.
