AutoNation Cure Bowl NCAAF Betting Lines & Preview

When the San Jose State Spartans and the Georgia State Panthers meet in Orlando’s Citrus Bowl to take part in the AutoNation Cure Bowl, they are witnessing the arrival of a program. Georgia State has only had a football program for six seasons. Between 2012 and 2014, they went 2-33. This year, things didn’t get off to a much better start, as they only opened 2-6. However, the passing game finally took fire, and the Panthers won their last four games to earn bowl eligibility. San Jose State (5-7) is only in a bowl game because they had one of the best ARP records, which is the process when there aren’t enough six-win teams to fill the bowl games. San Jose State is favored by 2.5 points, and the over/under total is 56 points. For NCAAF betting lines, click here.

Why should you choose San Jose State (-2.5)?

San Jose State has a passing defense that ranks #2 in the entire FBS, permitting only 153.6 yards a game. However, the reason why the Spartans lost to Boise State in their season finale was that the Broncos found their rushing game and picked up 300 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, rolling 40-23. The Spartans feature quarterback Kenny Potter who has thrown for 1,895 yards and running for 346 more, accounting for 20 total touchdowns. Tailback Tyler Ervin is averaging 5.6 yards per carry. The Spartans will have to put that passing defense to work if they want to prove they belong in a bowl despite only winning five games.

San Jose State will face off against Georgia State.

Why should you choose Georgia State (+2.5)?

Quarterback Nick Arbuckle has a personal reason to beat San Jose State: their coaches came to his campus to recruit some of the guys at his high school — but not him. He told the Associated Press, “I do remember when San Jose State came multiple times on recruiting visits but never talked to me. So it feels kind of good to have an opportunity to go against them now.” Arbuckle’s passing has been a key factor in Georgia State’s ascendancy. The Spartans feature a strong offense in addition to taht tough passing defense, so Georgia State will need to play well on both sides of the ball to cover here.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

I like Georgia State to emerge with their strong passing game and overwhelm San Jose State. I don’t think it will be a rout, but I like the Panthers to put that momentum to work and win 28-21.
