Army vs Navy Betting Pick & Prediction

Posted by Peter Boysen on December 7, 2016 in

The annual rivalry between West Point and the Naval Academy unfolds once again on December 10, as the Army Black Knights (6-5) take on the Navy Midshipmen (9-3). Navy fell in the American Athletic Conference title game last week to Temple, 34-10, while Army routed Morgan State, 60-3. Navy has won every matchup since 2002, so Army is looking to end a long streak of frustration in the rivalry. Take a look at our preview for this marquee game as well as the rest of the sports betting odds for the weekend.

Army vs Navy Betting Pick & Prediction

NCAA Football Odds: Navy (-8.5), O/U 47

Why should you bet on the Black Knights?

Junior quarterback Ahmad Bradshaw beat Morgan State with both his legs and his arm on November 19, passing for 57 yards and a score and running for 44 yards and another tally. However, most weeks it is the running game of the Black Knights that carries the team. Against Morgan State, the team picked up 504 yards on the ground, led by 111 yards from Andy Davidson on just 18 carries, good for an average over six yards per attempt. The Army defense only permitted 126 yards and eight first downs, and the Army secondary has shown stout play all year, as the team allows under 20 points per game.

Why should you put your money on the Midshipmen?

After putting up 75 points on SMU two weeks ago, Navy only hung 10 on Temple in the AAC title game. A big factor was the injury to starting quarterback Will Worth early in the Temple game. Zach Abey came on but went just 7 for 13 for 104 yards — and two big picks. Worth will not return for the Army-Navy game, and it was his legs that contributed heavily to the success of the Navy offense, which is also predicated on the run. Tailback Toneo Gulley also went down against Temple, and backup Chris High was not able to match his production level. If you bet on Navy, you like their backups to be able to keep up the pace against an Army team that does not have the same offensive firepower.

Betting Pick and Final Score Prediction

With the starting quarterback and tailback out for Navy, I see this game turning into a real grinder. Navy is already headed to the Armed Forces Bowl, while Army needs this win to secure bowl eligibility (one of their six wins did not count as they played two FCS schools). I like the Black Knights to turn the tables in the rivalry, winning by a 16-13 score.
