Why should you bet on the Wildcats?
UNC Asheville runs a defensive scheme that is vulnerable to a dominant big man, as the 1-3-1 defense moves the center out to the free throw line. Daniel Ochefu should be able to feast on the inside and force the Bulldogs into a different look. Villanova was the #1 team in the nation for a time this year, and they prosper by running a consistent halfcourt offense. They should be able to impose their will on the upstarts from down South.
Why should you put your money on UNC Asheville?
UNC Asheville has a couple of oddities about their team. The first is that all five players seem like they’re always moving through all five positions. There is no set point guard or shooting guard; instead, the team moves like a kaleidoscope. They also adopted a 1-3-1 pressure zone in the Big South tournament and used it to harass Liberty, High Point and Winthrop. Along the way, the Bulldogs knocked off the top two seeds in the conference to swipe the tournament championship and the berth in March Madness. The way to beat a 1-3-1 zone is to use passing and quickness, but the Bulldogs’ defense was quicker than the opposition in the conference tournament, and this isn’t a defense that Villanova has played against this year.
Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction
I like Villanova to beat the Bulldogs and cover, exposing that 1-3-1 zone and torching it for points in bunches. I’m picking Villanova, 90-71.
