Updated NCAAB Championship Odds
With the latest results in from the last week of play in the NCAA men’s basketball season, some of the lines for teams to win the title this year have shifted a bit. Let’s take a look at where your team stacks up right now.
Latest NCAAB Championship Lines
— NCAA March Madness (@marchmadness) February 8, 2016
North Carolina Tar Heels (6/1)
The Tar Heels just keep winning and winning. If you were worried about the team’s academic fraud investigation taking a toll on their postseason plans this year, it looks like the NCAA will not rule on this until after the tournament at the earliest. If the Tar Heels can knock off the Virginia Cavaliers as the ACC’s regular season champ, they are guaranteed a #1 seed in the tournament — which isn’t a guarantee of success, but it does provide the easiest path.
Kansas Jayhawks (7/1)
Kansas still has to deal with the test that Oklahoma will provide, but their home comeback win over Kentucky during the Big 12-SEC Challenge was a huge statement. Kentucky is one of the most talented teams in the nation as far as pure athleticism goes, but they don’t play defense and get stops down the stretch, and teams that can show discipline and patience while continuing to execute at a high level can get by them.
Michigan State Spartans (8/1)
Michigan State isn’t even in first place in the Big Ten, but they have the third best odds in the nation. Why? Because this is a team with a track record of deep runs in the NCAA tournament thanks to the guiding hand of Tom Izzo. The Spartans have made a reputation for themselves for peaking late and winning tough games in the tournament. Their win over Maryland has impressed the bettors enough to push these odds down.
Oklahoma Sooners (10/1)
Why is the #1 team in the nation sitting behind these other squads in the odds? That loss to Iowa State hurt a bit, and that Kansas State loss will likely knock them out of the stop spot, but when you’re dealing with odds, you’re also dealing with a program’s history. We’re used to seeing North Carolina, Kansas and Michigan State late in March Madness, but Oklahoma is a relative newcomer when it comes to basketball excellence. However, this is an athletic team that can drain the three — its only weakness comes inside.
Maryland Terrapins (12/1)
The Terrapins have been a little bit more inconsistent than some of the other teams above them, which is why their odds are just a bit higher. Make no mistake, though — the Terrapins are just as likely to be in the Final Four, at least in terms of talent, as any of these other teams. Don’t let that loss to Michigan State fool you — that was a tough road environment. As the season goes forward, watch how Maryland performs in their return games against Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue and Iowa to see how far they will go in March Madness.
