Why should you bet on the Mustangs?

The Mustangs have had a bizarre season, starting with the nine-game suspension of coach Larry Brown and the loss of postseason play thanks to the online coursework that a program assistant completed for Keith Frazier, and then continuing with Frazier’s leaving the team midway through the season to leave the squad with just seven scholarship players. At first the Mustangs pursued a perfect season, but they saw that melt into the Philadelphia snow as they lost their 19th game at Temple. Since then, they have struggled to win games against the conference’s top teams, including a loss last Thursday at Connecticut. With two games left, all the team has left is a shot at the regular-season title, and Connecticut is their last home opponent. Given how raucous the SMU home crowd can be, and given the Huskies’ loss to Houston over the weekend, the Mustangs have all the momentum going into this one.

Why should you put your money on Connecticut?

Connecticut has already beaten SMU once this season and has the motivation of revenge from losing the conference title game to the Mustangs on their home floor last season. SMU is playing for a regular season title and pride; Connecticut is playing for a seed in the NCAA Tournament that isn’t one of those “First Four” nuisances that send them to Dayton on a Tuesday night. The Huskies beat the Mustangs by getting second chance bucket after second chance bucket, as the Mustangs struggled to corral rebounds. If the Huskies can win the interior game, they will sweep the season series.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

On Senior Night, I’m picking SMU to use their momentum to beat Connecticut by the score of 77-71.
