The 15th-seeded Troy Trojans take on the second-seeded Duke Blue Devils (27-8) in the field of 64 of this year’s NCAA men’s basketball tournament. Troy won the Sun Belt Conference by prevailing in four games within five days, sending them to the Big Dance for the first time in 14 years. Duke became the first team ever to win the ACC tournament by winning four times in four days, crowning their title with a win over North Carolina in the title game. Let’s take a look at the March Madness betting preview for this game.

Why should you bet on the Trojans?

Troy didn’t play many contenders this year, although they did get within five points of USC on the road back in November. They have won six straight games — two before the tournament and then four to take the Sun Belt title. Jordan Varnado was the hero in the conference tournament final against Texas State, as he scored 18 points and pulled down a dozen boards. Wesley Person Jr. chipped in 16. Even though Troy shot just 35 percent on the night — including 1 of 17 from downtown — their defense pried 17 turnovers from Texas State, while the Trojans only turned it over five times. They’ll need all of that ball security — and much better shooting — if they plan even to cover that spread, let alone pull off the unthinkable upset.

Why should you put your money on the Blue Devils?

The Blue Devils didn’t click as a team until the beginning of February. Coach Mike Krzyzewski missed time for back surgery, and the team showed some real chemistry issues, and they even took a bad home loss against North Carolina State. With Coach K’s return, the team won seven in a row — but then they lost at Miami and Syracuse. Freshman Jayson Tatum was a big reason for the team’s revival in the ACC Tournament, putting up 19 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Luke Kennard scored 16 points in the final and got the MVP of the tournament award. If the Blue Devils can keep their offensive chemistry going and avoid some of those defensive lapses that have led to their bad losses, then they should roll in this one.

Betting Pick and Final Score Prediction

Troy worked really hard to earn their trip to the Big Dance, but I don’t see them getting by Duke…or even covering. I predict a final score of Duke 80, Troy 58.
