March Madness Sweet 16 Underdog Picks

As Thursday and Friday approach, the NCAA men’s basketball tournament is about to kick back into action, and at the end of the weekend we will only have four teams left. Let’s take a look at some of the underdogs in the matchups that you should consider taking. Even if they don’t win, if they cover you can still pick up a pretty penny with these March Madness betting picks.

March Madness Sweet 16 Underdog Picks

Texas A&M Aggies

Next Game: Texas A&M Aggies vs Oklahoma Sooners
Thursday, March 23rd
, 5:37 PM
Honda Center, Anaheim, California

The Aggies are 1.5 point underdogs to the Oklahoma Sooners, and this is one of the toughest games to pick (perhaps explaining that razor thin line, right? However, it’s important to remember that the Aggies have recently taken the Kentucky Wildcats to overtime in the SEC final and that they thumped Kentucky when the Wildcats traveled to College Station. They also stormed back against a Northern Iowa team that was incredibly under seeded, given the teams it had been in non conference play, and as they showed in their win over Texas in the first round.
What has Oklahoma done lately? Well, they barely beat VCU, a 10 seed that was not as highly rated as UNI. Before that, they beat a directional school from California in the first round. In the Big 12 tournament, they knocked off Iowa State but fell to a West Virginia team that is already out of March Madness. I like the Aggies’ pedigree of recent performances a little more and their defense is a little less likely to fold than the Sooners’. So I’d take the Aggies in this one.

Iowa State Cyclones

Next Game: Iowa State Cyclones vs Virginia Cavaliers
Friday, March 25, 5:10 PM
United Center, Chicago, Illinois

The Iowa State Cyclones are 5.5 point underdogs to Virginia in the Sweet 16. However, the over/under total here is 141, which means that the prognosticators are predicting a fairly low scoring affair. That means that the books are picking Virginia’s slow, plodding half court offense to dictate the rhythm and smother the Iowa State offense. However, the Iowa State offense is the high octane type that has periodically given Virginia fits this season remember when they went down to Miami and got a whipping? I think the Cyclones could turn this into enough of a track meet to keep this closer than six points and perhaps could send this top seed home before the Elite Eight can even begin.

Wisconsin Badgers

Next Game: Wisconsin badgers vs Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Friday, March 25, 5:27 PM
Wells Fargo Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Obviously, a one point game is not much of a line. However, the Badgers have shown a little more grit down the stretch this season than Notre Dame has. The Irish have pulled off signature wins here and there, most recently against Duke in the ACC tournament, but the Badgers have pulled from being a team in the basement of the Big Ten to a team in the Sweet 16. After they knocked off 2 seed Xavier, they showed me that they can get key stops AND big shots, and Notre Dame is still a little lacking on the defensive end. I’m picking the Badgers in this one.

Syracuse Orange

Next Game: Gonzaga Bulldodgs vs Syracuse Orange
Friday, March 25, 7:40 PM
United Center, Chicago, Illinois

The Orange are going to show the Gonzaga Bulldogs (4.5) something they haven’t seen all year a 23 defense combined with strong rebounding. Gonzaga is a solid rebounding squad, too, but while Gonzaga has been spanking teams in the first two rounds, so has Syracuse. I like them to knock off Gonzaga, but even if Gonzaga can hold them off late, I think it will be closer than 4.5 points.
