Why should you pick the Huskies?

Connecticut has a lot more motivation than SMU does at this point in the season. SMU is ineligible for postseason play after the NCAA brought sanctions for a former assistant doing online coursework for a player no longer with the program, and once the Mustangs suffered their first loss, they have gone 3-3. The team does have the regular-season title to play for, but they have showed less focus and discipline on the boards and on defense, particularly when they are playing away from raucous Moody Coliseum. SMU did win at Connecticut two seasons ago, when the Huskies won the NCAA title, but Connecticut has a lot more on the line — a chance to get an at-large bid in the NCAA tournament not the least among them.

Why should you pick SMU?

Connecticut was up by 20 on Tulsa at home this past weekend, and Tulsa almost came all the way back to win. The Huskies have shown a troubling tendency to fall asleep at the wrong time during games. The Mustangs and Huskies both played Gonzaga this year, but while SMU beat Gonzaga fairly handily, Connecticut lost. Tulsa has a lot of the same strengths on offense that SMU has — ball movement, accurate shooting from beyond the arc, and a big man (Markus Kennedy) who can make you pay with his offensive skills. If Connecticut is not careful, they could find themselves losing to an SMU team with just about nothing left to play for.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

After some chin-scratching losses to Houston and Tulsa, SMU showed gumption and ran Gonzaga out of the gym on Saturday night. When this team is motivated and focused, they have few peers in the nation. I like them to return to the site of their embarrassing loss in the 2014 AAC tournament and their loss to Connecticut during the regular season last year with the motivation to come out on top. I’m picking SMU, 78-74.
