Purdue at Ohio State Betting Pick & Prediction

The Ohio State Buckeyes (10-4) try to rebound from a 75-70 New Year’s Day loss to Illinois when they host the #20 Purdue Boilermakers (12-3) on Thursday night. Purdue took an ugly home loss from Minnesota on New Year’s Day, falling in overtime, 91-82. Let’s check out this college hoops matchup — and then take a look at our online betting lines for other big games going on this week.

Purdue at Ohio State Betting Pick & Prediction

When: Thursday, January 5, 2017, 7:00pm ET
Where: Value City Arena, Columbus, OH
Stream: WatchESPN
Radio: Purdue / Ohio State
NCAA Basketball Odds: TBA

Why should you bet on the Boilermakers?

Purdue’s success begins and ends with post man Caleb Swanigan. He posted 28 points and pulled down 22 boards against Minnesota in the loss, and it was his layup with 4.6 seconds left in the second half that sent the game to overtime. However, Purdue needs to play better defense against Ohio State than they did against Minnesota, allowing the Golden Gophers to make the first eight shots of the game, and then they went 5 for 7 in overtime. Purdue also needs to improve their ball security, as they turned the ball over 14 times to permit 19 points to Minnesota. If you like Purdue to bounce back, you like them to emphasize their interior game and camouflage their lack of quickness on the outside.

Why should you put your money on the Buckeyes?

If you like Ohio State, you want them to follow the blueprint of the Minnesota Golden Gophers, who took the game right to Purdue on Sunday thanks to Nate Mason’s 31 points, 11 assists and six boards. Mason had averaged just 13.5 points per game but was able to torch Purdue point guard P.J. Thompson. JaQuan Lyle (26 points) led Ohio State in their loss at Illinois — including 18 after the intermission. However, Ohio State had lengthy scoring droughts in both halves, which they will not be able to afford. If they can push the action against a Purdue roster that lacks athleticism, they might be able to pull off the upset on their home court.

Betting Pick and Final Score Prediction

I like Purdue to bounce back from a tough home loss against a solid Minnesota team. If they don’t improve their defense, they will not compete for a Big Ten title, but they still should beat Ohio State. I’m predicting a final score of Purdue 69, Ohio State 64.
