The Pittsburgh Panthers (17-6) head south to take on the #9 North Carolina Tar Heels (20-4) this Sunday in an afternoon ACC tilt set to tip off at 1:00pm Eastern time. The Panthers are in ninth place in the ACC, and they lost a nailbiter to Miami on Tuesday, 65-63. North Carolina is in a tie for first place in the ACC, and they are coming off a close win (68-65) over Boston College on Tuesday. Let’s take a look at the NCAAB online odds for this matchup.

Why should you bet on the Panthers?

The Panthers gave the Hurricanes all they wanted and more in their road loss on Tuesday night. The loss gave Pitt just its first losing streak longer than one game. They lost their fourth game (in four tries) against ranked opponents, and they continued a trend of losing when they don’t score at least 70 points in a game. The key is to get up and running for the Panthers, and if Jamel Artis has his shot going, Pitt is a real threat. If North Carolina comes out with low energy for this one, they will find themselves down in a hurry. Given the defensive energy that Pitt threw at Miami, this could be a trap game for the Tar Heels. They have played three subar games in a row — losing to Louisville and Notre Dame, and then barely beating BC — so Pitt has a shot if the Tar Heels haven’t figured out their issues.

Why should you put your money on the Tar Heels?

Over the longer season, North Carolina has been a dominant team. It’s true that the last three games have been difficult — BC led the game for most of the way — but the Tar Heels have been a top-five team for most of the season. They need to shore up their interior defense, and they need to stop relying so much on the jump shot rather than penetrating to the rim, but they have the talent on hand to do that. Roy Williams is a master at turning problem teams around before they start to hemorrhage too many losses, and the Tar Heels have a chance at home against an unranked opponent to do just that.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

I think the Tar Heels will scuffle along a bit in the first half and then turn things up and take care of the Panthers, winning 74-66.
