Why should you bet on the Nittany Lions?

Tony Carr led the way on a heroic night for Penn State, posting a career-high 24 points in the loss. Shep Garner added 15 more, as the Nittany Lions found themselves down by 14 points with 9:19 remaining in the second half but then came all the way back to tie inside a minute. Penn State’s big rim defender, Mike Watkins, got into early foul trouble and only saw 13 minutes on the floor — failing to gather a single rebound. This led to Indiana winning the rebound battle, 37-33 — and it kept Penn State from getting those second chance points that usually spark them. If you like Penn State, then you like them to get more efficient play out of Watkins and the backcourt to show the same hustle they showed against Indiana.

Why should you put your money on the Boilermakers?

Purdue has been the epitome of inconsistency during Big Ten play this year, but forward Caleb Swanigan and center Isaac Haas finally found themselves on the same page. Haas posted 24 points and six boards, while Swanigan had a 22-10 night as Purdue got out to a big start, going into halftime with a 44-30 lead, and cruising the rest of the way. Illinois had come in with a game plan to pressure the ball, but the offensive balance of Purdue — five players put up double figures in points — kept the strategy from working. The dominance of Swanigan and Haas inside kept Illinois from getting rebounds, and Illinois was unable to exploit the lack of athleticism in Purdue’s backcourt. If Penn State can’t expose that weakness either, Purdue should win.
