Why should you bet on SMU?

The Mustangs are ineligible for postseason play as a result of NCAA sanctions. However, that hasn’t stopped them from playing strong basketball, particularly at home, where they are 45-4 over the past three seasons, and undefeated this year. SMU lost at Houston last week, because of some real rebounding problems that the Cougars presented. However, they took their frustrations out on the Bulls. Their 34-point margin of victory in a road win was the largest for the program since the 1916-17 season, when they took on Dallas High School in a road game during the school’s first basketball campaign. Nic Moore is one of the best senior point guards in the nation, and even though the Mustangs only have eight players active, they have combined swarming defense and timely shooting as they have moved through the season. Their matchup with Tulsa is favorable on both ends of the floor.

Why should you put your money on Tulsa?

SMU isn’t going anywhere once the regular season comes to an end, while Tulsa is still on the bubble as far as qualifying for the NCAA Tournament. That difference in motivation could make a major difference, especially now that SMU has lost two games and can’t finish undefeated. The Hurricane picked up a win over Houston that was particularly impressive because the Hurricane outrebounded the Cougars 32-23. Pat Birt poured in 27 (a season high) for Tulsa, and he was the difference on offense — as he has been in many of the Hurricane’s wins this season. If the Mustangs can’t match Tulsa’s grit inside, and if they can’t shut down Birt from downtown (a major factor in their loss at Temple) then Tulsa could roll out of SMU with a win.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

SMU has been a strong home team all season long, as Moody Coliseum is one of the most raucous game environments in the nation. Tulsa has motivation to climb the standings, but SMU has the motivation to finish with an unbeaten home record. I like Tulsa to keep it close, but SMU will prevail, 75-69.
