Memphis Tigers vs SMU Mustangs Betting Overview

The #13 SMU Mustangs will have had six days to ponder their first loss of the season, which came last Sunday at Temple. The Mustangs, now 18-1, welcome the Memphis Tigers (13-7) to Moody Coliseum on Saturday night, with tipoff at 8:00pm Eastern time. Click here for our NCAAB lines.

Should you bet on the Mustangs?

The Mustangs are ineligible for postseason play because of the controversy surrounding Keith Frazier, who had help from a former assistant coach and administrative assistant in completing online coursework to help him get through the NCAA clearinghouse. Coach Larry Brown was suspended for nine games, and the team was banned from postseason competition, even though the employees have left the university and Frazier has bolted from the program, transferring to the University of North Texas. There are some who suggest that the Mustangs will now lose motivation because of their perfect season coming to an end.

However, the Mustangs still have senior Nic Moore, leading the offense. This is the same Nic Moore who joined a collection of Kansas Jayhawks to win an international tournament of college-age players last summer — and who led the team. He is looking to impress NBA teams with his play the rest of the season. They also have Markus Kennedy on the inside, also looking to get drafted or at least to find a spot on an NBA roster, and Jordan Tolbert could also end up on an NBA roster, or at least a D-league team. Plus, even if the Mustangs can’t play in the AAC tournament or the NCAA tournament, then can still sew up the league’s regular-season title for a second consecutive season.. There is the factor that the seniors want to show the NCAA that they left one of the nation’s best programs on the outside for an infraction far less serious than what North Carolina seems to have had going on in their academic programs — with nary a sanction to date. So betting on the Mustangs is a bet on both talent, inside and out, as well as motivation.

Should you bet on the Tigers?

Memphis comes to Dallas having whipped Central Florida 97-86 on Tuesday, led by the 35 points posted by Shaq Goodwin (with nine rebounds to boost). Goodwin went 15 for 23 from the field and 4 for 4 from the charity stripe in the game. Avery Woodson knocked down five three-pointers, scoring 19 points, and Ricky Tarrant Jr. drained four more 3’s. Overall, the team went 12 for 23 from downtown — and three-point defense has been one of the few weaknesses for SMU this year. So if Memphis gets hot from beyond the arc, this could be a long night for the Mustangs.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

I like the Mustangs to recover from their loss up in Philadelphia and knock off Memphis at home, 82-75.
