Why should you bet on the Hurricanes?

First of all, it would be hard to say that a Miami win would be all that much of an upset. The Hurricane have won 8 of 9 in ACC play, including a win over Duke. Their lone loss was an ugly result at North Carolina State, but you don’t get to the top of the ACC standings at this point in the season if you’re not for real in some very important ways. The factor that Miami brings is a suffocating inside presence, their ability to dominate the rebounds on both ends of the floor. North Carolina is coming off a loss to Duke in which the Blue Devils mounted a furious rally in the waning minutes, an experience that can sap a team’s confidence and bleed into the next game.

Why should you bet on the Tar Heels?

I talk a lot on this site about my Angry Revenge Theory. This happens when an elite team loses unexpectedly and then takes its anger out on the next opponent that they see. However, this usually is a factor when that next opponent is further down the standings or was already expected to lose a bit. If North Carolina comes out mad and chippy, Miami will simply take advantage of this. For the Tar Heels to win, they need to go back to their basics — slashing and cutting their way to the rim, committing to solid defense for 40 minutes. They aren’t the #5 team in the nation for nothing, and for them to win is what is expected.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

I like the Tar Heels to find their focus and get back on the good side of the balance sheet. I’m picking them to win, 78-76.
