Iowa vs Penn State Expert Prediction

Posted by Aaron . on February 16, 2016 in

The #4 Iowa Hawkeyes head east to take on the Penn State Nittany Lions on Wednesday night, with the game set to tip off at 6:30pm Eastern time. The Hawkeyes (20-5) still sit atop the Big Ten, but they barely escaped the Minnesota Golden Gophers at home on Sunday, winning 75-71. The Nittany Lions (12-13) are in 11th place in the Big Ten. They did knock off Indiana at home last week, but they got thumped at Nebraska on Saturday, 70-54. The NCAAB online odds will be updated soon.

Why should you pick the Hawkeyes?

Iowa is difficult to figure. They have solid talent, but they have a hard time winning big road games, and they have a hard time dominating teams that are well below them in the standings. Against the Golden Gophers, their leading scorer, Jarrod Uthoff, did not score for almost the first 17 minutes of the game. He did finish with 24 (along with 15 boards and six blocks), but that slow start is indicative of some of the problems that the Hawkeyes have had this year. However, they did fight through it and got a win at home. Against the Nittany Lions, they should be able to impose their will, even though it is on the road, and deliver the result that they want.

Why should you put your money on Penn State?

Sometimes it’s important to remember than when we’re betting on college basketball, we’re putting our money in the hands of kids who, for the most part, aren’t old enough to drink (legally). So you get some inconsistency. The Nittany Lions were able to knock off an inattentive Indiana team at home, but then they went to Nebraska and could not contain Andrew White III, who canned six three-point shots and scored 35 points. He keyed a 39-7 run during the game, scoring 18 of his team’s points during that stretch. This came three days after the Cornhuskers went fairly quietly in a loss at Wisconsin. Penn State probably isn’t as good as the team that beat Indiana, and they’re not as bad as the team that got rolled at Nebraska. They rebound well, and they play solid team defense, although they are vulnerable from beyond the three-point arc. If they can control the boards and manage Uthoff like Minnesota did, it’s conceivable that they would win this game at home.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

Iowa has been solid on the road when they haven’t been playing elite opponents. I’m picking them to control the game against Penn State and win, 69-63.
