The #17 Duke Blue Devils travel to Winston-Salem to take on their in-state rivals, the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, on Saturday afternoon in ACC basketball action. Duke (15-5, 3-4 ACC) lost at home to North Carolina State for the first time since 1995 on Monday night, prompting Coach K to return briefly from his leave of absence and call a meeting at his home to tell his players that they would not have access to their locker room or permission to wear “Blue Devils” attire until the showed they were ready to live up to the standards of the Duke basketball program. Wake Forest (12-8, 3-5 ACC) had won two straight in ACC play, beating Miami and North Carolina State, before falling at Syracuse on Tuesday night. Don’t forget to take a look at our college basketball odds and picks for all the week’s action.

Why should you bet on the Blue Devils?

If Duke is going to wake up at all this season, it should be after losing to North Carolina State — and then having their coach, recovering from back surgery, calling them to his home to ban them from their own locker room. North Carolina State lost by 51 points at North Carolina earlier in January — but they pulled back from a dozen-point deficit in the first half and then erased a nine-point lead in the game’s final 6:30. Freshman Dennis Smith, Jr. was the big hero for the Wolfpack, and the Blue Devils had no answers on defense when the Wolfpack turned up the offensive intensity. If you like Duke, you like them to swarm all over a Demon Deacons team that has not contended in conference play in years.

Why should you put your money on the Demon Deacons?

Wake Forest did a solid job in the first half against Syracuse, going into intermission with a 32-29 lead, but they could not contain the Orange offense in the second half, surrendering 52 points. John Collins (23 points, 12 rebounds) led the way for Wake Forest, pulling down some key offensive rebounds against that Syracuse 2-3 zone, but the Orange made some adjustments to box him out after halftime. Wake Forest did win the point battle inside, 16-8, but they were cold from behind the arc, going just 3 for 14 in the first half and 7 of 24 for the whole game. If you like Wake Forest against Duke, you think that the Blue Devils’ chemistry issues will continue to show themselves on the floor while Coach K is away from the team, and that Wake Forest will be able to take advantage.

Betting Pick and Final Score Prediction

If this were a tougher ACC foe, I would predict another stumbling block for the Blue Devils. However, Duke has the talent to right the ship and get back on a winning streak at Wake Forest. My final score: Duke 72, Wake Forest 64.
