March Madness Odds Analysis: Notre Dame vs Wisconsin

Written by on March 21, 2016

The Wisconsin Badgers meet the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame in the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. Wisconsin, a 7-seed in the East region, knocked off 2-seed Xavier in the second round of the tournament with a buzzer-beating three-point shot to seal the win. Notre Dame held off the Lumberjacks of Stephen F. Austin State University, an upset-minded bunch, to make it one step closer to a national title. Find out the latest NCAAB online betting odds here.

Why should you bet on the Badgers?

Wisconsin thrives by running a controlled halfcourt offensive attack rather than being one of those “small ball” teams. They average 68.1 points per game and shoot about 43 percent from the floor. Their stars are Nigel Hayes (16.2 ppg, 5.8 rpg) and Bronson Koenig (13.1 ppg and 2.5 apg) — who also knocked down the game-winning three against Xavier. The Badgers are acceptable from behind the arc (35.3%), but they only pull down 35 boards per game. They will need to focus on rebounding and defense to knock off the Irish.

Why should you put your money on Notre Dame?

The Irish have a little more octane in the tank on offense than the Badgers do, averaging 75.6 points per game. They are a bit of an enigma sometimes; they beat such teams as North Carolina, Duke and Louisville this year but also struggled against some teams that should not have been able to give them difficulty. The offense flows through Demetrius Jackson (15.4 ppg, 4.8 apg), and the chairman of the boards for the Irish is Zach Auguste (14.2 ppg, 10.8 rpg), although Bonzie Colon also kicks in a lot with 6.9 rpg. The Irish will need to get their points in transition and minimize Wisconsin’s chances to settle into a halfcourt rhythm.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

The Badgers have done nothing but shock people since it looked like they were going to miss the NCAAs (and maybe even the NIT) based on their early play. However, since January, they have won a ton of big games, and I like them to knock off a Notre Dame that is simply too inconsistent to make a run all the way to the finals. I’m picking Wisconsin to win, 71-69.
