On Saturday, the Toronto Raptors visit the San Antonio Spurs in pro hoops betting action. The Spurs (63-12) are in first place in the Southwest Division and just knocked off the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday night, 100-92. The Raptors (50-24) are in first place in the Atlantic Division, and they beat the Atlanta Hawks, 105-97, on Wednesday night. They face the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday night before heading down to San Antonio.

Why should you bet on the Raptors?

It’s been a long time since anyone beat the San Antonio Spurs at home. The track-meet teams (Oklahoma City, Golden State) have given it their best but fallen short. The Raptors have a different model for success: a grueling half court offense and a grinding defense that wears down the opposition, kind of a mirror image of the Spurs’ model. I would argue that the Raptors have as good a chance as anyone to take down the mighty Spurs in the shadow of the Alamo. Even so, I would only take the Raptors if they have a four- or five-point line.

Why should you put your money on San Antonio?

When one player falters in San Antonio, it seems like there is always another one ready to step up. Is Tim Duncan feeling his age? Then Kawhi Leonard is going to dominate the boards instead. Is Tony Parker cold from the floor? Then it’s Manu Ginobili’s night to drain shots from all over the floor. Is it time to get a crucial stop? Then the Spurs’ defense turns into a dense thicket, keeping opponents from getting a good look (and definitely from getting an offensive rebound). That’s the formula that Gregg Popovich has put together, and it’s worked over and over and over again. I think the Spurs have enough to knock off the Raptors, even though I think Toronto is the best team in the East.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

I like the Spurs to win, but the Raptors will give them all they can handle. I’m predicting a 104-101 San Antonio victory.
