The Staples Center will be abuzz on Thursday night, as the Houston Rockets come to Los Angeles to take on the current top seed in the Western Conference, the Los Angeles Lakers. These two NBA title contenders will square off in a high-powered offensive battle. Let’s see how the NBA odds will be for the Rockets vs Lakers.

Rockets vs Lakers 2020 NBA Game Preview & Betting Odds

Rockets Tough to Understand

The Rockets have become an NBA enigma as of late. The team’s general manager, Daryl Morey, has always been an innovator. He once again has been thinking “outside of the box”, as at the trade deadline, he traded away starting center Clint Capela, and brought in wing player Robert Covington. By doing this, the Rockets went to a non-traditional starting lineup with no centers or power forwards. This “small ball” lineup made up of guards and wing players has caused some match up issues for other teams, and has caused the Rockets opponents to make changes to their starting lineups and in-game rotations.

The Rockets are led by the NBA’s leading scorer, James Harden. Harden is averaging 34.4 points per game. Russell Westbrook, a player who many thought would struggle playing with Harden, has found his niche with the Rockets, and is averaging 27.5 points per game. This new style of play has opened the floor for Westbrook, and he has been thriving in it.

Lakers have Star Power

As for the Lakers, they’re led by the duo of LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Davis leads the Lakers in scoring at 26.7 points per game, while James is averaging 25.7 points per game. Both James and Davis are potential NBA MVP candidates.

The Houston “small ball” lineup may cause the Lakers to change their way of thinking. JaVale McGee normally starts at center, but the Lakers could insert Kyle Kuzma or another guard/win player into the starting lineup. The Lakers could also take a few minutes away from Davis, as the defensive matchups could be tough for him as well.

The Lakers are coming off of a 104-102 loss to Brooklyn on Tuesday night, while the Rockets defeated the Timberwolves 117-11 on Tuesday. That win by the Rockets broke a four-game losing streak, while the Lakers loss broke their four-game winning streak. In their last 10, the Rockets are 6-4, while the Lakers have gone 8-2. The Lakers are 23-8 in the comforts of the Staples Center, while the Rockets have gone 18-14 on the road.

James Harden has struggled shooting the ball over the last few games. That could play a huge factor in the outcome of this one. If he continues to struggle, this will be a huge advantage for the Lakers. One of the Lakers top defenders, Alex Caruso, is listed as day-to-day with a sore right hamstring. He did see limited time in Tuesday night’s game with Brooklyn.

Fun Matchup

This will be an exciting matchup between four of the top players in the NBA. Both of these teams have NBA title aspirations, and they will be looking to show off their offensive skills. Whenever you have LeBron James and James Harden on the same court, you know there’ll be some excitement. This will be a playoff-like atmosphere, so look for good things from the Lakers.
