NBA Playoff Preview: Golden State at Portland, Game 3

Posted by Aaron . on May 6, 2016 in

On Saturday night, the Portland Trail Blazers host the Golden State Warriors in Game 3 of their Western Conference semifinal. The Trail Blazers wasted a golden opportunity to level the series in Oakland in Game 2, as they entered the fourth period up by 11 points but simply got blown away, as the Warriors ended up reversing that margin and winning by 11, outscoring Portland by 22 in the last 12 minutes.  Find the updated NBA odds here.

Why should you bet on Golden State?

Stephen Curry might play in Game 3, and his addition would add yet another element to an offense that already has Klay Thompson firing on all cylinders, backed up by Draymond Green. Festus Ezeli, of all people, found ways to stuff the playmakers in the fourth quarter in Game 2, setting up transition after transition for the Warriors’ offense. The Trail Blazers had two good shots at an incomplete Warriors team, and they couldn’t finish them off either time. With Curry back, it’s difficult to see the Trail Blazers making much headway.

Why should you put your money on the Trail Blazers?

Portland spent the first three periods of Game 2 showing the rest of the league how to beat the Warriors at small ball. They stretched the floor in transition, leaving Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum with wide-open shots, with Mason Plumlee and Al-Farouq Aminu making the plays when Golden State started covering the guards. They ran a mean pick-and-roll with Ed Davis and Gerald Henderson, and when Golden State didn’t know which weapon to try and stop, Lillard kept hitting shots, scoring 17 just in the third quarter (nailing four shots from behind the arc). Then the Warriors decided to go big inside to contest the playmakers, and the jig was up. But if Portland figures out how to counter that adjustment, these two games in Portland could be interesting.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

Golden State no doubt remembers the 32-points shellacking they took from Portland in the Moda Center earlier this season, so they will no doubt be well prepared mentally for this game. I’m predicting a 120-114 Warriors win.
