Why should you bet on the Suns?
Given that the Suns have lost 16 straight road games, I don’t have a lot of confidence in a straight-up pick for them to beat the Southeast Division leaders. However, they do have some offensive talent, as five different players found double figures in points in their loss in Charlotte. Alex Len (18 points, 12 boards) and Mirza Teletovic (17 points) are the high points on their roster right now. The problem is their defense — against Charlotte, the Suns were down 35-18 after one and 68-42 at the half. It’s hard to keep pace with teams when you’re not getting stops. If the line were 15 or 20, I might consider the Suns, but as poorly as they’re defending, even that is an iffy proposition.
Why should you put your money on Miami?
The addition of Joe Johnson may actually put the Heat on a path to contend with the team that took their franchise player away in free agency a couple of seasons ago. In their rout of the Bulls, Miami shot 67.5 percent from the floor, the best night in the history of the franchise and the best in the NBA in the past 18 seasons. Hassan Whiteside is a dominant force for this team in side — against the Bulls, he poured in a career best 26 points and pulled down 14 more boards. With both the inside and the outside working (Johnson had 24 points in his first game at home with the Heat) this is a tough team for anyone — and the Suns simply don’t have the talent to stop them.
Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction
I’m picking Miami to roll right over Phoenix and win, 115-96.
