Why should you bet on Dallas to win?
It’s true that Dallas did not find a way to beat Oklahoma City this season. However, the Thunder have shown some frustrating inconsistency at different times this year — such as their nagging inability to beat the Houston Rockets, who barely made it into the playoffs. The problem is not on offense but on defense, where the Thunder sometimes think that their video-game scoring pace can carry them all the way to a win, and they don’t need to get key stops. So Dallas can win if they can put up big points and keep Oklahoma City from scoring. Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle used a much slower approach to offense down the stretch thanks to an injury to Deron Williams, and I expect him to do much the same with J.J. Barea now on the shelf.
Why should you put your money on the Thunder to win?
The scoring duo of Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant has been torching teams all season — including the Mavericks. Durant averaged 25.7 points per game in the three games in which he played Dallas, making 51.9% of this shots. Westbrook played all four games and averaged 17.8 points, 9.8 assists, 6.8 boards and 2.3 steals per game. There is nothing to suggest that the Mavericks have solved any of the matchup nightmares that the Thunder represent for them. This is the third matchup between Oklahoma City and Dallas in the postseason. The Mavericks prevailed in 2011 on the way to a title, but the Thunder prevailed in 2012 and has dominated the series since.
Expert Pick and Final Series Prediction
I like Dallas to grind out this series, playing a tough style led by Dirk Nowitzki and Carlisle’s savvy coaching. However, I still like Oklahoma City in six.
