NBA Playoff Preview: San Antonio at Oklahoma City, Game 6
On Thursday night, the Oklahoma City Thunder host the San Antonio Spurs in Game 6 of their Western Conference semifinal, but few would have predicted that the Thunder would hold the 3-2 advantage in the series at this point. The key has been a pair of Oklahoma City wins in San Antonio, just the second and third home losses the Spurs have suffered all season long. In Game 5, the Thunder prevailed, 95-91, behind a monster stretch from Russell Westbrook, as the Spurs led by three going into the fourth period, only to see the Thunder come back and win by four. Why should you bet on San Antonio?
You can’t count the Spurs out until they have lost that fourth game, because they are that tough. They have come from behind once before from a 3-2 deficit, against New Orleans in 2008. If they recommit to physical play inside, and if they can box out, they should be able to stop the second-chance points. If the Spurs can nail some outside shots to stretch the Thunder defense, that will make attacking the basket easier.
Why should you put your money on the Thunder?
All year long, I’ve written that when the Thunder play solid defense, they just might be the best team in the West. They showed this on Tuesday night, getting key stops and defensive (and offensive boards) against the Spurs, while Russell Westbrook was posting 35 points, 11 boards and nine assists. Kevin Durant chipped in 23 points as well, and now the Thunder head home in control of the series. One underrated key has been Steven Adams, who has taken advantage of some soft spots in the Spurs interior to get key rebounds. If the Thunder play this complete of a game in Game 6, the series might not make it back to Oklahoma City.
Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction
The Thunder have now won two straight in comeback fashion in the fourth quarter against the Spurs. I’m predicting that the Spurs will have sapping of their collective will, and I’m picking Oklahoma City to win, 100-96.
