The Boston Celtics (37-20) open the second half of their season north of the border, as they face the Toronto Raptors (33-24) on the road. Boston has been one of the hottest teams in the East, winning 11 of 13 going into the All-Star break, although they did lose their last game before the recess, falling by one in Chicago, 104-103. The Raptors lost five of eight going into the break, but they ended on a winning note, taking down Charlotte at home, 90-85. Why should you bet on the Celtics?

Boston entered the All-Star break engulfed in controversy, as the Chicago Bulls’ Jimmy Butler sank two free throws with 0.9 seconds left in the fourth period to seal that 104-103 win — after Marcus Butler’s fingertip apparently brushed Butler’s elbow on a jump shot. Butler and Boston star Isaiah Thomas each put up 29 points in the duel. Thomas now has put up 20 or more points in 41 straight games, taking the franchise record from John Havlicek (1971-1972). Boston lost the rebound battle, 51-31, and they gave up 22 second chance points, scoring only four. If you like the Celtics in this one, you think they’ve figured out the energy issues on the boards that kept them from winning easily in Chicago.

Why should you put your money on the Raptors?

Toronto added Serge Ibaka via trade over the break, giving the Raptors a force on both offense and defense in the paint. The Raptors had been in some disarray going into the break; the only reason that they were able to finish off their win over Charlotte was that coach Dwane Casey benched three starters for the whole fourth period, putting rookie Jakob Poeltl and reserve guards Cory Joseph and Norman Powell to fuel the comeback. Charlotte had posted a 34-14 third quarter, but then the Raptors won the fourth period 32-10 to take the win, with DeMar DeRozan, Norman Powell and Jonas Valanciunas all on the bench. If you like the Raptors, you like them to have healed some chemistry issues that had them sliding down the Eastern Conference standings before the break.

Betting Pick and Final Score Prediction

The Bulls did knock off Toronto and Boston before the break, but I like the Celtics to come out fresh after their long time off and put together a strong game that starts another winning streak. I predict a final score of Boston 104, Toronto 99.
