NBA Betting: Are the Lakers Still Favorites to Repeat & Win it All?

Prior to free agency, long term contracts, and frequent player movement, dynasties were very common in the sports world. In this day and age, we see very few dynasties. With the sports landscape being the way that it is, it’s hard to even win two championships in a row. The 2020-21 Los Angeles Lakers are looking to repeat as NBA Champions. Let’s take a closer at this team and where they are at this point of the season so you can plan your bets against their NBA Championship odds.

Lakers still favorites to win Championship, can they pull it off?

The Lakers have the talent and the make up to repeat. However, one factor that has derailed many repeat chances has already hit the Lakers. Anthony Davis will miss the next few weeks with an achilles injury. An injury to Davis or LeBron James at the wrong time would severely cripple the Lakers chances at a repeat. The Golden State Warriors were on their way to a second straight championship when Kevin Durant got hurt. Not having Durant was a difference maker, and the Warriors lost their shot at back-to-back titles.

In looking at the Los Angeles Lakers roster, they have a talented team with plenty of depth and experience. The Lakers currently have the second-best record in the NBA. Coming off of a short offseason, many felt that James, Davis, and the rest of the Lakers would be fatigued. However, it seems as though the Lakers came into the season rejuvenated.

James is playing at an MVP level. He’s playing over 34 minutes per game, averaging over 25 points per game, with eight rebounds and eight assists. Davis has missed some games due to injury, but when he has played, he has put up some very good statistics himself. Even though his numbers are slightly down, he’s still averaging over 22 points and eight boards per game.

One of the main reasons that the Lakers have played at a high level is because of their offseason acquisitions. They signed Marc Gasol, Montrezl Harrell, and acquired Dennis Schroder in a trade. They have valuable bench players in Kyle Kuzma, Alex Caruso, Markieff Morris, and Talen Horton-Tucker.

The added depth could be a huge factor in the Lakers repeat chances. Over the last six months, Los Angeles has played a lot of basketball. They didn’t get the normal offseason to rest and relax their bodies. The Lakers play hard on both ends of the floor. They’re one of the top defensive teams in the league. While many teams tend to save some energy on the defensive end of the floor, the Lakers don’t follow that trend.  By adding some of these players, and not trading Kyle Kuzma, the Lakers won’t be hurt when resting James and/or Davis for a few minutes at a time.

If the Lakers can stay healthy, they have a great shot at winning another title. With all of their depth, talent, and their ability to guard, they can match up with anyone in the league. By going out and making improvements to their championship team, they made it known that they were out to win another title. Until someone steps up and shows that they’re the better team, the NBA title is the Lakers’ to lose.
