Bellator 254 Analysis & Betting Preview

  • Venue: Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut
  • Watch: CBS Sports Network/DAZN

Main Event Breakdown

Ilima-Lei Macfarlane (11-0-0)

Macfarlane is currently the women’s flyweight world champion. With an undefeated record, she has three successful title defenses that were all third round stoppages.

Her fighting resume shows that she has two wins by knockout, six by submission, and three by decision. In November 2017, her win over Emily Ducote secured the belt which was a fifth-round submission.

In Macfarlane’s recent fight, she fought the distance for the first time in a title fight defense back in December 2019. However, fighting in her native Honolulu, she was successful and took a unanimous decision to defeat Kate Jackson in the Bellator 236 event.

Looking to add to her already impressive resume, “The Ilimanator” (Macfarlane), has the most victories against women within the Bellator cage at 10 wins. She will be motivated to cement her name with a legacy inside the cage with yet another successful title defense.

Juliana Velasquez (10-0-0)

Velasquez is a tough, undefeated opponent. She is coming in with a resume that consists of four wins by knockout, one by submission, and five by decision.

Velasquez recently took part in the same Bellator 236 card in which Macfarlane defeated Jackson. She finished that fight against Bruna Ellen with a decision, but many had considered that one to be a title eliminator.

However, the bout previously on her resume displayed a great performance. She was able to put up a second round knockout against Kristina Williams back in July 2019.

Velasquez is a black belt judoka that is also attempting to become the second women’s flyweight champion in Bellator history. She currently has her promotional winning streak to six.

Velasquez also has prior stoppage wins over Rebecca Ruth and Kristina Williams. Velasquez has defeated former title challenger Alejandra Lara, so she is well equipped to handle this matchup.

Potential Winning Pick

Ilima-Lei Macfarlane is arguably one of the best female fighters Bellator has to offer. Nothing against Bellator, but she could compete very well in the UFC and make a run there. However, her recent contract extension has her staying in Bellator for an additional 10 fights.

She has already defended her title four times, with three of them ending by the third round. Her opponents gradually became better, and are nearly the same level as what this fight could be.

With that being said, Velasquez will utilize her kicks and punches effectively. But she has never fought anyone with the caliber of Macfarlane, and will suffer her first loss.
