Where: PNC Park, Pittsburgh
Radio: Washington / Pittsburgh

Pitching Matchup: Stephen Strasburg (3-1, 3.28 ERA) (WAS) vs Chad Kuhl (1-3, 5.81 ERA) (PIT)

Why should you bet on the Nationals?

Stephen Strasburg is still one of the premier pitchers in the National League. He has started six times against the Pirates in his career, fanning 60 batters in 43 innings and putting up a 2.51 ERA. This season, he has made the adjustment to pitch exclusively from the stretch to avoid the toll on his body from the movements in his windup, but his effectiveness has not dropped at all. Only four of the current Pirate starters have faced Strasburg, and no one with more than six at-bats against him has a career average higher than .231.

Why should you put your money on the Pirates?

The one weakness that the Nationals have comes in their bullpen, as they have definitely done the “bullpen by committee” this year. Shawn Kelley, Blake Treinen, Enny Romero and Matt Albers have all gotten chances in the closing role, but Washington has already lost three games in which they entered the ninth inning with a lead. That’s not a trend you want to continue if you have an eye on a deep postseason run, and if the Pirates can get to the Nats’ bullpen, they could definitely break through as well. The Pirates are starting Chad Kuhl on the mound, and while his record and ERA are a bit ugly so far this year, he did shut out Washington for six innings last season, limiting them to one hit.

Betting Pick and Final Score

Stephen Strasburg is definitely the main factor in my betting decision here. I see him keeping the Pirate bats cold, and I see the Nats solving Kuhl this time around. I predict a 4-1 Washington win.
