Top MLB Betting Picks for the Weekend

Friday, May 20: Cleveland at Boston

Pitchers: (Corey Kluber, 2-5, 4.30 ERA) (CLE) vs Clay Buchholz (2-3, 6.11 ERA) (BOS)

This should be A Tale of Two Aces, but it has been the worst of times for both of these pitchers. Corey Kluber has been a little better, going at least six innings, but Red Sox hitters have taken Kluber deep six times over the last five years, which is a pretty big number given that they don’t see Kluber more than a couple times a season, and given Kluber’s past numbers. Buchholz has been worse, surrendering an opponent’s batting average of .266 (not too bad) but permitting five earned runs in five of his eight starts so far this year.

So who do you pick? In this game I’d seriously consider the over. You might find a book that puts the total around 6 because of the pitchers’ reputations, and I would go over. I might even go over 8 on this one, because the likelihood of some big innings is large.

Saturday, May 21: Texas at Houston

Pitchers: Cesar Ramos (0-2, 4.32 ERA) (TEX) vs Mike Fiers (3-1, 4.63 ERA) (HOU)

The Rangers are eagerly awaiting the return of A.J. Griffin to the starting rotation, because his work as the fifth starter had been nothing short of splendid…until he had that dreaded shoulder tightness. His replacement, Cesar Ramos, has been OK, allowing a 3.48 ERA in two starts, but right-handed batters are hitting an unsightly .340. The Astros are likely to take advantage of this. The Astros are starting Mike Fiers, who is 3-1 with a 4.65 ERA in seven outings, permitting just six walks in 40 innings.

So who do you pick? Despite the Astros’ dismal spot in the standings, I would pick Houston to win this one. The Rangers are reeling after getting swept by Oakland during the week, and the Astros are more than ready to end their lengthy losing streak to their in-state rivals.

Sunday, May 22: Washington at Miami

Pitchers: Max Scherzer (4-3, 4.01 ERA) (WAS) vs Adam Conley (3-2, 3.40 ERA) (MIA)

The same Max Scherzer who fanned 20 in a game has also lost two of his last three starts, permitting eight home runs. The Marlins chased him after five innings on April 21, beating him and scoring five runs. Adam Conley will see the Nats for the third time this season, and his ERA against Washington is 8.22, but seven of those runs did come in two of the 7 innings he has thrown against him. He is 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA in his home starts.

So who do you pick? The smart betting picks on this game might be the over, given the fact that both pitchers have given up runs to each other, as well as to take the Marlins right now, as the Nationals have been in a little bit of an offensive slide and Scherzer.
