MLB Betting: Top Games to Wager On this Week

Posted by Derrick Harper on August 31, 2021 in

As we head into the month of September and the pennant races are heating up, every game is important. This week, we’ll see a lot of big games that could affect the playoff standings. On Wednesday, September 1st, we’ll see some very important games. Let’s take a look at some of the games that could have a bearing on the playoff race so you can bet against the MLB odds

Top Games for Wednesday, September 1st

St. Louis Cardinals @ Cincinnati Reds

Even though it hasn’t been the best of seasons for the St. Louis Cardinals, they’ve managed to hang around and are in the race for the final Wild Card spot. One of the two teams standing between the Cardinals and a playoff spot is the Cincinnati Reds. The Reds currently hold the second Wild Card spot in the National League.

The Cardinals are 3.5 games behind the Reds for that last playoff spot. With a good series against the Reds, the Cardinals can cut into that deficit. On Wednesday, St. Louis will send JA Happ to the mound, while the Reds will counter with Wade Miley. Both of these journeymen starters aren’t strangers to meaningful games. Miley has been a surprise this season, going 11-4 with a 2.74 ERA.

Boston Red Sox @ Tampa Bay Rays

Not too long ago, the Red Sox were leading the American League East. Now, they’re 8.5 games behind the division-leading Tampa Bay Rays. Even though they’re not winning the division, the Red Sox have a grasp on the second American League Wild Card spot. Even though they’re currently in the playoffs, the Red Sox would be more comfortable if they were leading the division. There’s still enough time for them to catch the Rays, but they need a good showing in their series to stay close.

On Wednesday, the Red Sox will send their ace to the mound, as it will be Chris Sale day. Since returning to the mound a couple of weeks ago after missing more than a year due to Tommy John surgery, Sale has been masterful. He’s 3-0 with a 2.35 ERA and 21 strikeouts. Sale has looked like he’s back to where he was prior to his injury. If he throws well, it will be hard for the Rays to do much against him.

Milwaukee Brewers @ San Francisco Giants

This series will pit two division leaders against each other, as the Central-leading Brewers will head out west to San Francisco to take on the top team in the NL West. If the playoffs were to start tomorrow, these two would hold the top two seeds. Heading into the week, the Brewers were 5.5 games behind the Giants for the best record in the National League.

The Giants will send Kevin Gausman to the mound on Wednesday. The former top prospect has pitched well this season, as he sports a 12-5 record with a 2.49 ERA. Gausman has struck out 176 hitters on the season. Gausman will be opposed by journeyman starter Brett Anderson. Anderson is 4-8 this season with a 4.27 ERA.
