The St. Louis Cardinals (26-29) tangle with the Cincinnati Reds (26-30) in the third game of their midweek series in the Queen City. The Cardinals have dropped four straight, including a weekend sweep at the hands of the Chicago Cubs and then a loss in the opener of this series on Monday night, falling 4-2. The Reds had dropped two of three against the Atlanta Braves (and five of six overall) before winning that game on Monday.

Why should you bet on the Cardinals?

The Cardinals have an excellent shot against Reds starting pitcher Bronson Arroyo. He has given up home runs in bunches this season. Although his last start (6 IP, 2 ER) went well against Atlanta, St. Louis has some better bats. Aledmys Diaz (.400 career average against Arroyo, 2 HR, 4 RBI), Jedd Gyorko (.444), and Jhonny Peralta (.667, 1 HR, 2 RBI) have all succeeded against Arroyo historically. Lance Lynn starts on the mound for St. Louis, who is trying to get his first win since May 5. His last start against Chicago (5.1 IP, 2 H, 2 ER) was solid, but the offense didn’t give him enough support. I see the Cardinal bats getting plenty to hit from Arroyo.

Why should you put your money on the Reds?

The Reds pulled off a comeback win in Monday’s opener, as Eugenio Suarez and Scooter Gennett hit consecutive doubles in the seventh inning to put Cincinnati on top to stay. That sort of win can deliver the sort of energy that can carry a team all the way through a series. Scott Schebler (.667, 1 HR, 1 RBI), Gennett (.348, 1 RBI) and Joey Votto (.458) have all hit well off Lynn historically, so if they can get some fat pitches to hit early, they could steam to a series- closing win.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

I like the Reds’ spunk at the plate, but I just don’t see Arroyo keeping even this slumping Cardinals offense in check. I predict a final score of St. Louis 5, Cincinnati 3.
