Pittsburgh vs St. Louis MLB Betting Preview

Posted by Aaron . on May 5, 2016 in

On Friday night, the Pittsburgh Pirates enter Busch Stadium to open a three-game weekend set against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Pirates swept the Cardinals in the first week of the season. St. Louis (14-14) is in third place in the NL Central, having beaten the Phillies, 5-4, on Wednesday night. The Pirates (15-13) are just a game up on the Cards in second place, but they have lost four in a row, just having been swept at home by the Cubs and losing Wednesday, 6-2. Find out more about the latest MLB online betting lines here.

Why should you bet on Pittsburgh?

The Pirates send Francisco Liriano to the mound — the last Pirate to start a game that the Bucs won. On Saturday, he fanned six batters in 6 innings, permitting just one run, and issuing no walks. He dominated the Cardinals on Opening Day, striking out 10 men and pitching six scoreless frames. What had been a salty offense ran into a real slump in Chicago, as they scored five runs in the three games, but the Cubs have one of the toughest starting rotations in all of baseball, and the Pirates are doubtless glad to be heading out of town.

Why should you put your money on the Cardinals?

Carlos Martinez has posted terrific numbers so far this season, although he ran out of gas in his last start on Sunday, permitting three runs on home runs hit on consecutive pitches. He has earned four of the eight wins that starting pitchers have picked up so far this season. The only Pirate who has homered off him in his career is Andrew McCutcheon, but the only players hitting above .286 against him with more than a handful of at-bats are Starling Marte (.357, 3 RBI) and Polanco Gregory (.615, 1 RBI).

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

I like Liriano to shut down a fairly anemic Cardinals offense and the Pirates offense to find that life they had before the Cubs showed up. I’m predicting a 6-2 Pittsburgh win.
