On Saturday afternoon, the Chicago Cubs host the Pittsburgh Pirates in the middle game of their weekend series at Wrigley. The Cubs (25-8) are in first place in the National League Central, and the Pirates (18-15) are seven games back in second place. The Pirates beat the Reds, 5-4, on Wednesday, while the Cubs have had their first two-game losing streak of the season, losing 7-4 and 1-0 to the Padres in a doubleheader sweep on Wednesday. Find the updated MLB betting lines here.

Why should you bet on Pittsburgh?

The Cubs had won eight straight before suffering that twin killing at the hands of the Padres, and the Cubs’ offense suffered a rare blackout, with no Cub getting past second base against Padres starter Drew Pomeranz. The Pirates send Jeff Locke to the mound, and while his ERA is still a little on the high side, it has dropped significantly over his last three starts, as he has posted a 2.84 ERA in those games, all quality starts. While the Cubs do have ace Jake Arrieta on the mound, Pirates phenom Andrew McCutchen has hit .320 off him in his career, and Matt Joyce is batting .417 against the Bearded Wonder.

Why should you put your money on the Cubs?

Let’s look at Arrieta’s season line again: 6-0, 1.13 ERA, 44 K. He did not earn a decision in his last start, which turned into a 13-inning win over the Washington Nationals, and he did struggle with control of his slider and walked four batters. However, he has not lost a game since July of last season. There are quite a few Cubs who enjoy digging in at the plate against Jeff Locke (Anthony Rizzo, .350, 3 HR, 5 RBI in 20 AB; Jayson Heyward, .368 in 19 AB; Dexter Fowler, .444, 3 RBI in 9 AB; Javier Baez, .333, 1 HR, 2 RBI). It would be a mistake to turn one off day by the Cubs into a trend at this point.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

This should be a good pitcher’s duel. However, the Cubs have been the clutch team too many times this season to bet against them. I’m predicting a 3-2 Chicago win.
