Pittsburgh Pirates at Chicago Cubs MLB Betting Preview & Prediction

It’s been a season of sweeps so far for the Pittsburgh Pirates (3-5) who lost two in Boston, won three over Atlanta and then got swept by the Cincinnati Reds. Thursday they go back to Boston for a makeup game, and then Friday they play in Chicago against the Cubs (5-3). The defending world champions were shut out by the Dodgers on Wednesday, 2-0, and finish that series Thursday afternoon before welcoming Pittsburgh in a Friday matinee. So, let’s take a closer look at the MLB betting preview for this matchup.

Pittsburgh Pirates at Chicago Cubs MLB Betting Preview & Prediction

When: Friday, April 14, 2017, 2:20pm ET
Where: Wrigley Field, Chicago
RadioPittsburgh / Chicago
Live Stream: MLB.tv
Pitching Matchup: Gerrit Cole (0-1, 6.55 ERA) (PIT) vs Kyle Hendricks (1-0, 6.00 ERA) (CHI)

Why should you bet on the Pirates?

Gerrit Cole has a 6-1 career record at Wrigley Field in seven starts, logging a 2.20 ERA. The only Cub in the projected starting lineup who has ever homered off Cole is Javier Baez (1 for 9 lifetime). Pittsburgh’s offense will need to wake up, though, as they were outscored 21-5 in their sweep by the Reds, and they went 0-for- 23 in those three games with runners in scoring position. Cole’s second start of the season was much better than his first, but the Cubs have too many big bats for the Pirates to plan on a pitchers’ duel.

Why should you put your money on the Cubs?

The Cubs have scuffled on offense a little bit to start the season; in the first two games of their series against the Dodgers, they have only put up three runs. With their banner going up on Tuesday and their championship rings coming on Wednesday, the Cubs are still in the midst of World Series celebration. Kyle Hendricks takes the hill with a 9-2 lifetime record at Wrigley last year, posting a 1.32 ERA in 15 appearances last year. He gives the Cubs a solid chance of keeping a Pittsburgh offense that has had a bad week already down in the dumps.

Betting Pick and Final Score Prediction

Until the Pittsburgh bats wake up, I don’t see them competing with the Cubs. That crazy travel schedule, going through Boston to Chicago for a matinee game won’t help either. I predict a final of Chicago 5, Pittsburgh 2.
