The Philadelphia Phillies beat Cincinnati on Opening Day, but since then fortunes have moved in the opposite direction for one of MLB’s oldest franchises in the weeks since. The Phillies (3-6) send one of their best arms to the hill on Saturday afternoon, though, to take on the Nationals (5-4). Will that be enough to beat the Nationals in the MLB lines?

Philadelphia at Washington MLB Betting Lines & Game Info

When: Saturday, April 15, 2017, 1:05pm ET
Where: Nationals Park, Washington
Radio: Philadelphia / Washington
Stream Option:
MLB Odds: Washington Nationals at -125
Pitching Matchup: Jeremy Hellickson (1-0, 0.90 ERA) (PHI) vs Tanner Roark (2-0, 4.09 ERA) (WAS)

Why should you bet on the Phillies?

The Phillies really struggle on offense — and when they get some hitting, they give up some big numbers. They just finished getting swept by the New York Mets, a series that featured two one-run losses but also a 14-4 tattooing on Tuesday. They do send Jeremy Hellickson to the mound on Saturday, though, and he picked up his first win of the season over the Nationals. The only member of the Washington lineup hitting over their career average against Hellickson with more than a handful of at-bats is Daniel Murphy (.357, 14 AB, 1 HR, 3 RBI). So if Hellickson can keep the Nats down and the Phillies can get to Tanner Roark, then Philadelphia has a chance.

Why should you put your money on the Nationals?

The Nationals are starting to build some momentum after a slow first week, taking two of three from St. Louis in a midweek series and outscoring the Cards 22-9 in the two wins. The problem with hoping that the Phillies can get to Roark is that last year, in five starts, Roark went 3-0 against Philadelphia, posting a 0.79 ERA, a 0.89 WHIP and fanning 30 men in 34 innings. Also, the Phillies didn’t add any bats in the offseason, which means that they’re going to have to do it with pitching and defense — and an iffy lineup.

Betting Pick and Final Score Prediction

I like Hellickson’s arm, but I don’t see the Phillies doing much damage to Roark. I predict a 3-2 win for the Nationals.
