Why should you bet on the the Nationals?

The Nationals are a bit of a star-crossed team, with a roster that appears to have the talent to win the National League East, and perhaps even a pennant, but they have had a hard time executing. They saw that again in Thursday’s loss. In the fifth inning, the Nats had two men on and one out, down by two runs, when their cleanup hitter, Ryan Zimmerman, strode to the plate. Marlins reliever got Zimmerman to fly out and then induced a groundout from Jayson Werth, finishing up four scoreless innings after a rain delay to seal the win. The Nationals have such bats as Bryce Harper (the reigning NL MVP) and Steven Strasburg in their rotation, so if they can get consistent production, they should threaten the Mets for the title.

Why should you put your money on Miami?

The Marlins are learning to relax under the leadership of new manager Don Mattingly. David Phelps learned this in Thursday’s win, as he had pitched himself into that pickle in the fifth before Mattingly came out of the dugout for a visit. Phelps was expecting the hook but instead got to finish the inning and even slapped a hit for his first career RBI. As this leadership style spreads to the rest of the team, expect the Marlins to outperform their dreadful 2015 ways and make some noise in the NL East.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

I like the Nationals to right the ship after a home opener loss and get their offense in order. I’m predicting a 4-1 Washington victory.
