Why should you bet on Los Angeles?
Alex Wood hasn’t had that great of a season so far, but his last start was a dandy. He made a mechanical adjustment, and when we took the hill against San Diego on Friday, he threw seven innings and permitted just a single run. Steven Souza Jr. (.500 BA, 1 HR, 1 RBI) is the only Ray who has had success hitting Wood, and only five starters have even faced him, which gives Wood an advantage. The Dodgers did end a six-game losing streak with Sunday’s 1-0 victory. That could be what the Dodgers needed to turn things around.
Why should you put your money on the Rays?
Don’t let Drew Smyly’s 1-3 record fool you. Instead, look at the 41 strikeouts in five starts and that 2.60 ERA. He is one of the best first-strike pitchers in the game right now. The lack of run support from the Rays is the culprit for his poor record right now. Adrian Gonzalez is only hitting .250 against Smyly for his career, and the only Dodger with a batting average above .300 against Smyly is Howie Kendrick (.333 BA, 1 HR, 3 RBI). Evan Longoria is hitting well for the Rays, and if some of the other players join him, they have a shot against the Dodgers.
Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction
I like Smyly to manage the Dodgers’ offense, and the Rays’ offense is going a little stronger than the Dodgers’ right now. I’m predicting a 4-1 Tampa Bay win.
