Favorites, Smart Picks & Dark Horses for the 2019 MLB Season

Spring training is underway, and the 2019 MLB season is less than a month from starting. As rosters are finalized and the final free agents find homes in these opening weeks of exhibition play, it’s a prime opportunity to lay down World Series futures. The latest 2019 World Series odds have the Houston Astros and New York Yankees as 6-1 co-favorites to win it all, with the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers — the 2018 World Series teams — next on the board at 7-1. Eleven of baseball’s 30 teams have World Series odds of 18-1 or lower, so there are plenty of MLB Betting sleepers to consider.

Favorites, Smart Picks & Dark Horses for the 2019 MLB Season

Same Ole, Same Ole

The usual suspects will highlight the oddsmakers this year. The Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees, and Boston Red Sox lead the charge but, besides the usual favorites, here are some dark horses as well.

One team worth looking at long and hard is the Cleveland Indians. They have, perhaps, the easiest road to the playoffs as they are in the AL Central division. It is a strong possibility that they are the only team from that division to finish above .500 and they have relatively tempting odds at 10-1. Francisco Lindor and Jose Ramirez make for a great one-two combo and Corey Kluber is the kind of ace you can ride deep into the playoffs.

Cardinals Looking to Get Back

Another team worth noting is the St. Louis Cardinals. They finished just 2.5 games behind the 2018 wildcard, Chicago Cubs. After last season, all they did was add Paul Goldschmidt and Andrew Miller. This team will be better than a year ago. If it is a large enough change is yet to be seen. With that being said, though, I’d avoid risking it by reaching for any team in the NL Central.

The Brewers, Cubs, and Cards will be duking it out so there is no guarantee that any of those three even make it to the playoffs, and at best, all three get in, but two of them will play in a one game playoff to advance. The odds are against you when picking in the most competitive division in baseball.

The Brewers are one of the favorites for the 2019 MLB Season.

The Atlanta Braves would also be a nice dark horse to ride. They are young, but man are they talented. A few years ago, they had the best farm system of any team around. We are seeing those same players wearing MLB jerseys now. If they can get past the jitters, they may be a real force. They have the advantage of playing in the division featuring the Mets and Marlins, however, Bryce Harper left the Nationals only to join the Phillies.

Phillies Big Moves for 2019 MLB Season

I think everyone is looking at what Philadelphia did in free agency and for good reason. They added Andrew McCutchen, JT Realmuto, Jean Segura and Bryce Harper to their lineup without giving up Rhys Hoskins, Aaron Nola, or Jake Arrieta, arguably their most valuable assets. They will be a tough out, especially if everyone can stay healthy, made a push this year like few have before.
