On Thursday night, the Detroit Tigers will be in Baltimore to open a weekend series with the Orioles. The Tigers (15-17) are in third place in the American League Central, and they just ended a seven-game slide by beating the Nationals, 5-4, on Tuesday. The Orioles (19-12) are in first place in the American League East and have won three straight, including a 5-3 win over Minnesota on Tuesday night. Find out more about the updated MLB sportsbook odds here.

Why should you bet on Detroit?

Ending a long losing streak can mark a shift in momentum for a team, and one bright spot recently has been Andrew Romine, who has taken over the shortstop role while Jose Iglesias is out. Romine made a couple of primo plays in Tuesday’s win, and having a solid defense up the middle gives pitchers more confidence. Miguel Cabrera also had a big RBI single as a pinch hitter in Tuesday’s win, and the Tigers have long lived and died with Cabrera’s bat, so a revival from him is a big sign.

Why should you put your money on the Orioles?

The Orioles get to face one of the Tigers’ worst starters so far in Mike Pelfrey. Sure, the Tigers signed up for two years and $16 mil, but he has been dreadful. In his last start on Saturday, he didn’t make it out of the sixth inning against the Rangers, permitting five runs. Mark Trumbo (.500, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 10 AB) and Jonathan School (2-3 lifetime, 3 RBI) especially enjoy facing Pelfrey, but as his ERA shows, a lot of hitters have polished their numbers with him on the mound.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

I don’t know if I’d bet on this game until Baltimore announces a starting pitcher, but as it stands, I think that whoever they send out would be competitive with Pelfrey. I’m predicting a 7-4 Oriole win.
