On Wednesday night, the Chicago Cubs welcome the Cincinnati Reds to Wrigley Field. The Cubs (6-1) are in first place in the National League Central and beat the Reds on Monday, 5-3, in their home opener. The Reds (5-2) are just a game back of the Cubs, and they took two of three from the Pirates over the weekend. Check out the updated MLB online betting spread here.

Why should you bet on the Cubs?

The Cubs will start John Lackey in this game. He pitched very well last year for the Cardinals, although last week’s start against the Diamondbacks was not stellar. He gave up six runs in six innings, but the Cubs pounded out 14 runs, giving him the win anyway. A lot of solid pitchers give up bad outings in the first week of the season, but I expect Lackey to be back in form this time. The momentum that the Reds had built evaporated quickly in Monday’s series opener, when Addison Russell belted a three-run Jimmy Jack against Reds reliever Jumbo Diaz in the bottom of the eighth inning, turning a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 lead, which would be the final margin of victory. That momentum should serve the Cubs well on Wednesday.

Why should you put your money on Cincinnati?

The Cubs send Alfredo Simon to the mound, and he is hopeful to get a better outcome than in his first start. He held the Pirates to one earned run and five hits in five innings on Friday, striking out 7 hitters, but then the bullpen coughed up the game as the Reds lost 6-5, sticking Simon with the no-decision. Reds starter Brandon Finnegan was able to have his way with the Cubs lineup on Monday, and if Simon pitches well, he should have similar results. The Reds seem to be off to a much better start this year than last year’s disastrous campaign.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

These Cubs are on a roll, and they have one of their best pitchers on the hill on Wednesday. I’m predicting a 4-1 Cub win.
