Chicago Cubs at Pittsburgh Pirates Friday Night MLB Odds Prediction

Posted by Ted Merrick on June 15, 2017 in

The Chicago Cubs (32-33) open a three-game weekend series in Pittsburgh against the Pirates (30-36). The Cubs are still suffering from the epitome of the World Series hangover, having lostsix of their last eight, including a 9-4 setback in New York against the Mets on Wednesday night. The Pirates are trying to play their way back into contention, having won four of five, although they did lose on Wednesday to the Colorado Rockies, 5-1. With that in mind, here’s a closer look at the latest MLB odds preview for Friday’s matchup.

Chicago Cubs at Pittsburgh Pirates Friday Night MLB Odds Prediction

Where: PNC Park, Pittsburgh
TV: WGN / RTPT

MLB Odds: TBA
Pitching Matchup: Eddie Butler (3-2, 4.03 ERA) (CHI) vs Trevor Williams (3-3, 5.13 ERA) (PIT)

Why should you bet on the Cubs?

Yes, Kyle Schwarber belted his longest home run of the season, sending a shot into the right- field stands at Citi Field, but that didn’t keep the Cubs from giving up nine runs and taking a loss. Inconsistency has been the order of the day for Chicago this year. On Friday, they start Eddie Butler, who pitched decently in his last start against Colorado — giving up three runs in five innings — but his pitch counts get too high because of inconsistent control, so he can’t go deeper into games. If he can find the plate against the Pirates, he can give the Cubs a real shot to win.

Why should you put your money on the Pirates?

As inconsistent as Eddie Butler’s control has been, Trevor Williams has not been much more reliable for the Pirates. He only lasted four innings against the Miami Marlins on Saturday, permitting six hits and five runs. He has not started against Chicago this year, but he has come out of the bullpen twice to face them, permitting two earned runs on five hits in five combined innings. The Pirates’ offense has been somewhat more consistent lately, and getting catcher Francisco Cervelli back from the concussion list will add some stability. If you like the Pirates, you see Williams settling down while the Cubs continue their relapse into inconsistent pitching.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

This is a tough game to pick, given the inconsistent play of both teams lately. However, the Cubs have the better bats, and I see the Pirates having to go to that bullpen quite early. I predict a 7-5 Chicago victory.
