Chicago at San Francisco NLDS Game 3 Betting Pick & Prediction

Posted by Peter Boysen on October 10, 2016 in

The Chicago Cubs enter Game 3 of their National League Division Series up 2-0 over the San Francisco Giants. The dominant pitching of the Cubs has driven the narrative so far, as the Giants have only scored two runs in two games, and Cubs pitchers have whiffed 12 men, permitting just 12 hits, driving their winning streak in games when they permit fewer than four runs to nine. The Chicago offense has not been all that solid so far in the first two games, so if there is good news for the Giants in this matchup, it is that their ace, Madison Bumgarner, has a chance to hurl another shutout. Take a look at all of our postseason MLB lines.

Why should you bet on the Cubs?

Jake Arrieta had an up-and-down season this year for the Cubs, but he did finish with an 18-8 record and a 3.10 ERA with 190 K’s in 2016. In his postseason career, his record is 2-1 with a 3.66 ERA and 28 K. So far, Kris Bryant and Javier Baez have produced five hits and two RBI — but the rest of the Cub lineup has fallen on hard times offensively. In Arrieta’s last 52 starts, the Cubs have a .750 record — 39-13. In their last 26 games after a day off, Chicago is 19-7. Given the fact that the Giant offense has fallen silent since that three-run blast by Conor Gillaspie in the wild card win over the Mets, Arrieta has a real chance to salt away the series in three.

Why should you put your money on the Giants?

My argument for the Giants begins and ends with Madison Bumgarner. Brandon Belt and Buster Posey have not been hitting — and Posey especially has played the hero in postseasons past for San Francisco. Bumgarner had a terrific season, going 15-9 with a 2.74 ERA and 251 K. In his playoff career, he has posted monster stats: 8-3, 1.94 ERA, 83 K. Against the New York Mets in Wednesday’s wild card game, he threw nine shutout innings as the Giants emerged with a 3-0 win. The Giants have won six of Bumgarner’s last eight starts, and they have also won four of the last five games with the Cubs at AT&T Park.

My Betting Pick and Final Score Prediction

I like Bumgarner to head to the hill and throw nine innings — and maybe even hit a home run of his own. I don’t think the Giants can win this series, but this night will belong to their playoff ace. I’m predicting a final score of San Francisco 2, Chicago 0.
