MLB Betting: Cubs vs. Reds Series Picks & Predictions
This weekend two struggling National League Central teams will clash as the Chicago Cubs travel to Cincinnati to take on the Reds. The Reds have failed to live up to expectations this season, as many predicted that they would win the National League Central. After making numerous trades and free agent acquisitions, the Reds looked like the team to beat in the Central. At 12-17, the Reds are sitting in 4th place in the Central, 5 ½ games behind the division-leading Cubs. Let’s jump right into actions so you can bet on their MLB odds.
MLB Betting Analysis: Cubs vs. Reds Series Preview
The Cubs are in 1st place in the NL Central standings, but they have been slumping as of late. Just 5-5 in their last 10 games, the Cubs bats have gone cold as of late. Kris Bryant is on the injured list, Javier Baez, Kyle Schwarber and Anthony Rizzo haven’t been able to get it going, and the rest of the lineup other than Ian Happ has been average at best. Thanks to stellar starting pitching, the Cubs still hold a 3-game lead over the 2nd place Cardinals.
On Friday night, the Cubs will send their ace, Kyle Hendricks to the mound. Hendricks has been hurt by a lack of run support this season. He’s currently sitting at 3-3 with a 3.55 ERA. Hendricks had his worst outing of the season against the Reds on July 29th, giving up 6 runs.
Hendricks will face off against Anthony DeSclafani. DeSclafani is 1-1 on the season with a 5.71 ERA. DeSclafani has been in and out of the rotation this season.
On Saturday the teams will play a doubleheader. In Game 1, Yu Darvish will take the hill for the Cubs. Darvish has had a great start to the season. He’s 5-1 with a 1.70 ERA. He has struck out 44 batters on the season. He shut down the red-hot Chicago White Sox in his last start. Darvish threw 7 innings of one-run ball, striking out 10.
Game 1 will be a great pitching matchup, as Darvish will be opposed by Trevor Bauer. Bauer has had a nice start to the season, going 3-1 with a 1.65 ERA. Bauer has struck out 49 hitters in 32 innings pitched. He has become one of the top hurlers in the National League.
In Game 2, the Cubs have yet to name a starter. The Reds have tentatively announced that Tyler Mahle will make the start. Mahle is 0-1 with a 4.41 ERA. In his last start against the Cardinals last Sunday, Mahle gave up 3 runs in 3 innings pitched in a loss. Mahle hasn’t been on a consistent schedule with all of the games postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
For Sunday’s series finale, Luis Castillo will throw for the home team, while Alec Mills will take the bump for the visitors. Castillo has had a disappointing 2020. He’s now 0-4 with a 3.90 ERA. He has been plagued by a lack of run support. His stuff has been pretty good, but the struggling Reds bats haven’t helped him.
Alec Mills has had an up-and-down season. He’s currently 3-2 with a 4.55 ERA. He won his last start at Detroit. He gave up 3 runs in 7 innings, striking out 7. He seems to go in 2-start spurts. The good news for the Cubs is that he has 1 more start to go before he’s due for another bad outing.
