The Baltimore Orioles play the second game of their midweek series against the Dodgers in Chavez Ravine on Tuesday night. The Orioles (47-34) are still in first place in the American League East but followed up a seven-game winning streak with a four-game sweep by the Seattle Mariners up in the Pacific Northwest, so now they are trying to use this interleague series to regroup. The Dodgers (47-37) are in second place in the National League West but have won four straight in their bid to catch the San Francisco Giants, including a three-game sweep of the Colorado Rockies over the weekend. Why should you bet on Baltimore?

Chris Tillman has been one of the more dominant starters in the American League this season. He also has the advantage of seeing players who haven’t faced him much since this is an interleague game. No Dodger has more than eight at-bats against him, and only five of them have ever faced him at all. And despite the fact that the Orioles got swept in Seattle, their offense was still clicking, as they put up a combined 10 runs in the last two losses. With strong pitching on the mound, the Orioles should still be fine.

Why should you put your money on the Dodgers?

Those Chris Tillman numbers are a little deceiving, at least in terms of a short-term sample. Tillman has permitted 14 earned runs in his last 14 innings. Also, their starter, Kenta Maeda, is a Japanese rookie who has been terrific his first year. Those five losses are more a function of poor run support from the Dodgers than from any lapses on his part. He averages 8.6 strikeouts per nine innings, a number that could give the swing-happy Orioles some fits.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

I like the Dodgers to pick up the win here. The Orioles are still reeling from that sweep, and the Dodgers also have the advantage of having the pitcher bat, a situation that is new to Baltimore. I’m predicting a 6-3 Los Angeles victory.
