The Oakland Athletics (16-18) take on the Texas Rangers (16-20) in the middle game of their weekend series on Saturday night. The A’s have won four of five, including a 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday. The Rangers are riding a three-game winning streak thanks to a 5-2 walk off win over the San Diego Padres on Thursday night. So who has the edge heading to this game? Let’s find out in the following MLB betting preview.

Sonny Gray (0-1, 4.22 ERA) (OAK) vs Nick Martinez (0-2, 5.18 ERA) (TEX)

Why should you bet on the A’s?

Sonny Gray labored through his last start, going just 4 innings and scattering seven hits. He gave up four runs, but only one of them was an earned run. Five Rangers have homered off Gray in their careers, but Gray has done slightly better in his second and third turns through the batting order than Martinez has. Also, the Rangers’ bullpen is getting torched at a higher rate than the Athletics’ bullpen is, so after the two starters leave, Oakland has an advantage as well.

Why should you put your money on the Rangers?

Nick Martinez is decent for four or five innings, and then opposing hitters start shelling him. In his last two starts, he has posted a ghastly 7.94 ERA and taken a pair of two losses, but in his career he has a 4-2 record and a 2.34 ERA in his seven starts and four bullpen appearances against Oakland.

Texas Rangers MLB

The Rangers do come into this game with some rare momentum, after Mike Napoli hit home runs in the eighth and ninth innings to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 5-2 win. The Rangers’ reliance on the home run to generate scoring, though, means that they end up swinging from the heels and striking out way too often. If you like Texas, you see them getting some fat pitches from Gray and sending them into the night sky.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

As poorly as Nick Martinez as pitching, I don’t see the Rangers keeping up with the A’s in this one. I predict a final score of Oakland 7, Texas 5.
